REVIEW – FUJIFILM 60mm f/2.4 XF Macro Lens

IMG_7311

If you just bought a Fujifilm X-E1 or X-Pro 1, and you got the 18-55mm lens bundled as a kit, then this is the next lens I would buy. The FUJIFILM 60mm f/2.4 XF Macro Lens is a perfect food photography or portrait lens that not only give you great creamy out of focus areas but ultra-realistic sharpness at the same time.

For food photography the FUJIFILM 60mm f/2.4 XF Macro Lens has to be Fujifilm’s top lens, at the equivalent of a 90mm on a full frame 35mm camera it is comparable to Canon’s 100mm for half the price.

WHY I WOULD BUY FUJIFILM 60mm f/2.4 XF Macro Lens –

Again, I can’t stop talking about the sharpness of these new XF Fuji lenses and the FUJIFILM 60mm f/2.4 XF Macro Lens is no exception.  They have taking the mirror-less camera market and raised it up a notch by cutting back on all the frivolous bells and whistle and focused on what pros care about most, the lenses!

Not only does the FUJIFILM 60mm f/2.4 XF Macro Lens have sharpness and bokeh which brings pros to it’s door, it’s offered at a price that is attainable to most amateurs. The aperture ring right on the lens is clearly labeled and rotates in 1/3-stop increments which really helps me dial in the exposure and having it on the lens is something I’m very fond of as I started photography using old film cameras.

The combination of the FUJIFILM 60mm f/2.4 XF Macro Lens medium telephoto compression and f/2.4 maximum aperture really give great out of focus areas, wrapping your subject in a circle of softness.

I really love the effect the 60mm gives to my food photography as my food will be pin-point sharp and the rest of the table is nice and soft.  It really adds a 3D quality to the photos.

WE WOULD USE THE FUJIFILM 60mm f/2.4 XF Macro Lens FOR –

FOOD PHOTOGRAPHY:

This lens was made for it, beautiful bokeh and incredible sharpness makes the subjects pop! Just check out some of those photos below, I usually add some sharpness in post, but with this macro it’s not needed. It’s definitely going to be a competitor for my Canon 100mm Macro lens when it comes to a shoot. But with the Canon I can’t do all the cool stuff like focus peaking that I can do with this Fujifilm system!

PORTRAITS:

This lens has a really fast auto focus which allows me to capture my daughter running around, but it also allows me to shoot in low light situations because of the f/2.4 maximum aperture.  I use it a lot from BBQs to the studio.

WHAT ANNOYS US –

Needs a firmware update.  But thats quick and easy, just download it from Fuji’s site.

In the Muscat area? I got my gear over at Photocentre, they are the official dealers of Fujifilm cameras and lenses. They have some great staff and a huge selection of camera equipment plus other geeky photo gadgetry.
