Taking a step back to find inspiring food photographers in the world of image making is one of the most important steps to grow as a photographer. I don't know where I would be without the constant stream of beautiful images from those photographers who truly inspire me and my own work.
Of course Instagram is a great source for finding some amazing food photographers and the foodie culture, in a large part spawned by the platform itself, is truly awe-inspiring.
Recently, I wrote an article about how if you Want To Become A Better Food Photographer, you need to stop taking pictures.
It is all about pressing pause on your photography and to focus on looking and analyzing images to improve your own food photography.
In the spirt of that I want to share with you a few of the wonderful photographers on Instagram that truly inspire me and my work.
1. SARAH COGHILL @sarahcoghill_photography
Sarah Coghill has an amazing food and travel photography portfolio, both on Instagram and on her personal website. I first discovered her work while reading a copy of Food And Travel UK magazine where she did a beautiful photo story in Sri Lanka. Coincidentally, I was asked to do an assignment later in Sri Lanka and her work was a huge inspiration for my work there.
2. SIGNE BAY @singebay
Signe Bay was one of the first food photographers I started to follow on Instagram. Her photography displays an amazing attention to detail when it comes to lighting and styling her compositions. With an amazing collection of props and her skills in the kitchen she produces fantastic "gathering" style of food photography that makes you want to have a seat at her table.
3. EVA KOSMAS FLORES @evakosmasflores
A fellow Portlander, Eva Kosmas Flores produces some great food photography. With moody light, she captures gorgeous food and sure love for rustic props. Her images have deep layered effects, which is interesting given the flat graphical perspective of the overhead camera angle. Her profile constantly provides your feed with a window into her beautiful northwest lifestyle.
4. SVET @a_violet_dream
If you love food photography with that quintessential human element Svet's @a_violet_dreams profile is one to get loads of inspiration from. With a gorgeous farm house aesthetic to her food photography, she creates some beautiful light with a knack for great food styling.
5. VALENTINA SOLFRINI @valentinahortus
If you love the dark and moody style of food photography lighting Valentina has a very inspiring collection of images. She also photographs fantastic lifestyle images that match really well with the farm style to her food photography. I love her inclusion of all the fresh ingredients that make her food look (and I imagine taste) so delicious.
6. NAOMI @bakersroyale_
I first saw Naomi's food photography on Google+, her style includes a mix of both rustic and bright colors that just pop off the screen. Great photography that showcases simple and delicious looking recipes with a style that looks straight out of your favorite gourmet food magazine.
7. MATT @realfoodbydad
Finally able to include a fellow man to the list, Matt who is the husband of Naomi @bakersroyale_ is also a great food photographer posting some inspiring images on the daily. Very family centric, his food photography includes some gorgeous lighting, prop and food styling that simply, but effectively makes his recipes look absolutely delicious.
8. DENNIS PRESCOTT @dennistheprescott
I'm a long time follower of Dennis's food photography. He takes the "grazing" or "gathering" style of food photography to the next level. With an almost "Where's Waldo" style to his compositions, he gracefully crams as much ingredients and food into one image, that I can't help but marvel at the sheer complexity. He'll also populate your feed with burgers that look so damn good you'll won't regret adding him to your list.
9. TRISHA ZEMP @trishazemp (PUSH PLAY)
The last two are more of fun inspirations, their work gets my creativity flowing for sure. Trisha Zemp creates fun stop-motion advertisements that will make your scrolling stop (pun intended). Being very interested in stop-motion myself, I marvel at the amount of work it must take her for each one. She has a beautiful aesthetic that is colorful, bright and cheerful making her vides so fun to watch. Her skill and dedication to her craft is truly and inspiration.
10. SCOTCH TROOPER @scotch_trooper
If your a scotch fan you'll sure appreciate the Scotch Trooper's account gracing your feed. I'm admittedly a frequent sipper of the fine single malt goodness and so this account gives me more joy then photographic inspiration. Although, I often times find my creative spark when my mind is distracted by the funny scenes and descriptions he creates. I also discover whole heaps of different kinds of scotch and brandy I've never heard of. All around a great account to spend the evening with.
