REVIEW – CANON EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Standard Zoom Lens

The CANON EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Standard Zoom Lens is the lens that we use the most, and other than the standard 50mm, it’s the lens we recommend for people entering into the market. It is an all around lens, great from landscapes to food. It has a hefty price tag, close to $2,000 USD when we bought it and the version 2 that is out right now was $2,299.00, but have a look at Amazon for the current price. This CANON EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Standard Zoom Lens was sure worth the investment. If I was to consider all the things I have shot with it and the fact that it has been with me for many years now and most likely a few more, I can say it has definitely paid for itself.

WHY I WOULD BUY THE CANON EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Standard Zoom Lens –

The CANON EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Standard Zoom Lens is sharp throughout and really singles out your subjects at f/2.8 with a really close minimum focal distance, so you can get much nearer to your subject, than most zooms. Although the CANON EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Standard Zoom Lens is not as wide or as long as some nature and landscape photographers would like, it’s an awesome food photography and portrait lens. Like I said though it’s our go-to lens, we simple use it for everything from travel to time lapse. The glass captures all the colors and details like no other zoom lens we’ve owned. Prime lenses are great but when you need some zoom capabilities for those quick compositional adjustments the CANON EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Standard Zoom Lens ROCKS IT!

WHAT ANNOYS US –
To be honest in the 3 years that I’ve owned the CANON EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Standard Zoom Lens and the hell we’ve put it through, I’m still happy. My only annoyance is sometimes when shooting overhead shots of food the weight of the glass causes the focal length to zoom out, slowly turning my 50mm composition into some wider focal length shot. This causes us to re-compose, wasting valuable time when the food is on the table and the light is just right. This could be due to the over use of our lens (the zoom ring getting too loose) and I see the version 2 comes with a zoom lock lever, which might help, but a simple fix for that is a little tape.

All in all, after the years of owning the CANON EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Standard Zoom Lens, I still have no complaints. It will stay in our family until the day it dies.
