REVIEW – CANON 7D

Canon 7D Review - We Eat Together

The Canon 7D is the 5DMKII’s little brother.  It touts all the features of it’s older sibling, but with a APS-C sensor and packs even more video functions at around half the price.  This is still one of the best entry cameras into serious photography and will continue to have a great longevity for photographers in all areas.

WHY I WOULD BUY CANON 7D –

All the features that pros would want with a price tag like this, the 7D is a hard camera to beat.  They took the magic of the 5DMKII and jacked it up a notch, while at the same time dropped the price through the floor.  For us it makes a great back-up body, and in fact it’s the number 1 camera I recommend.  If we want to shoot food, studio portraits, nature or travel we can use the 7D. I use it as my second camera when shooting video.  It’s always in my bag, wherever we go.  It’s faster, lighter, and has more autofocus points than my 5DMKII. One of the key points for us food shooters, is that even though the 7D is not a full frame camera, it still has a viewfinder that offers a 100% coverage. A little piece of tech, thats is extremely important when we are composing those food shots.

WHAT WE WOULD USE THE CANON 7D FOR –

Everything! The CANON 7D rocks when it comes to stills and video.  Check out one of the videos my student, Mohammed Al Ajmi, shot exclusively using the Canon 7D

WHAT ANNOYS US –

Nothing as the CANON 7D is a pretty solid camera all around.  The one thing that irks me is the kit lens they pair the CANON 7D with.  We bought 24, Canon 7D Kits with the 18-135mm lens for work. I have to say that about a 1/3 of the lenses have horrible aberrations and are for the most part unusable especially when shooting architecture. Now this can be solved by following the general rule, which is not to buy the kit lens.  We had to for work, but I would never purchase that lens for myself.

Check out some of the photos we’ve made with the Canon 7D:
